The Core Curriculumはコロンビア大学教育の根幹を成すもので、コロンビア大学の教育カリキュラムの中で最も重要なものです。 その中心的な知的使命は、文学、哲学、歴史、音楽、芸術、科学における重要な思想や業績について、幅広い視点をすべての学生に提供することです。
Contemporary Civilizationは、1919年に戦争と平和に関するコースとして始まり、1937年にLiterature Humanitiesが創設されました。 1947年には、芸術人文学と音楽人文学が加わり、新たにアジア人文学の科目が導入されました。 1990年には「グローバル・コア」（旧「メジャーカルチャー」）が、2004年には「科学のフロンティア」が加わり、「コア」の必須科目となった。 コア・カリキュラムの授業は、その内容もさることながら、少人数制の授業形式も重要です。 これらの科目は約22名のゼミ形式で行われ、コロンビア大学での教育が積極的な知的関与に重点を置いて開始されることを保証しています。 少人数制のクラスは、学生生活の早い段階から教授陣と知的な関係を築き、知的探求のプロセスを共有する機会を提供する。 コア・カリキュラムでは、より良い答えの追求と同じくらい、より良い問いの追求が重要です。 コア・カリキュラムで磨かれるスキルや習慣は、注意深い観察、綿密な分析、効果的な議論、想像力豊かな比較、さまざまな考えに対する敬意など、複雑で変化する現代社会で従事する市民として生きていくための厳しい準備を提供するものなのです。
